The Presbyterian Church of Fairbury was established in 1870.
Then and now, the members and friends of the church count on one another as family. This church family welcomes you to a warm and caring atmosphere. Our long history of mission is effective due to
the commitment of the congregation in resources and personal involvement. We remain committed to the truth found in God's
Holy Scripture and place our trust in the saving Grace of
one Lord, Jesus Christ.
The word Presbyterian comes from the Greek word "presbyeros", which means elder. An Elder is a lay leader elected by the congregation to govern the church. This is the foundation of our denomination, Elders elected from the congregation, by the congregation to serve the church. Even the minister is called a teaching elder, and is elected by the congregation.
The Session
The Presbyterian Church is not to be a church run or ruled by a single minister. The members of the church shall have the responsibility to oversee the workings of the church. This is very similiar to our national form of government.
The Session is made up of nine elders elected by the congregation to serve a three-year term. The Session is the governing body of the church. The Session oversees all major decisions within the church. Each Elder on the Session serves as head of various committees within the church.
Deacons
The Presbyterian Church also has the office of Deacons. Deacons are an officer of service to those sick, distressed or friendless. They are to care for the needs of widows, shut ins, nursing home, and those hospitalized. Their ministery is one of service and to be a living example of the life Jesus Christ led.
The First Presybterian Church of Fairbury has 12 Deacons. Four Deacons are elected each year to serve a three-year term.
