About our Pastor -
Reverend Spencer Homan
I was born and raised in a rural community in southeast North Dakota. My hometown was a farming community that had a population around 1,000. I was always active in church growing up, but I never even thought about being a pastor back then. In college, my life took an abrupt turn as God put it upon my heart to pursue a calling as a pastor. I was going to school for computer graphic design/communications back then, and I can remember most of my friends and all of my professors thought I was absolutely nuts. But I switched careers despite their protests and went to Jamestown College, ND to receive my B.A. in Religion/Philosophy. It was there that I met my wife. She and I were best friends throughout college, and our Senior year we began dating. In the spring of '99 she and I both graduated from Jamestown, and shortly thereafter we were married.
The next step in the process for me was moving to Dubuque, IA. There I attended the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. For Presbyterians, it is a three year process of schooling, on the job training, testing, and evaluation before governing bodies. If we are still standing at the end of it all? they give us our Masters of Divinity degree, and ordain us as Ministers of the Word and Sacrament. From there, it was a time of discernment to discover where God was calling us to go.
Very early on in the process I felt God leading me to Fairbury, and a visit here only concreted my beliefs that this is where God wanted me to be. My first day here at Fairbury was August 13th, and I've already been having a wonderful time. The town is a friendly atmosphere where people feel like "family." I look forward to many years serving here at Fairbury.
